Lot Essay

A painter of portraits, genre, historical and literary subjects, Wirgman exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1867 onwards. His most notable work was Peace with Honour, which depicts Disraeli speaking with Queen Victoria after the signing of the Berlin Treaty in 1878. The fine modeling of the sailor's face in the present drawing is testimony to the artist's skill as a portrait painter.
