Lot Essay

This is a preparatory study for Strang's Adam and Eve series, commissioned by the Wolverhampton brewer and collector Laurence W. Hodson to decorate the Library of his house, Compton Hall. This commission was Strang's first major work and the only one of its kind that he was ever given. The intensity and seriousness of expression apparent in the ten completed oil paintings established his career as a painter.
