Lot Essay

According to legend Lady Godiva, wife of Leofric (968-1057) Earl of Mercia, rode naked through the streets of Coventry in protest to a tax levied on the people by her husband. Alfred Woolmer's picture shows Lady Godiva with her white horse beyond. The street has boarded windows in obeyance to her proclamation that the people of Coventry should shutter their windows prior to her procession.
