Leighton was often drawn south in the autumn and winter months, searching for inspiration amongst the classical remains of the Mediterranean. In 1867 he journeyed from island to island along the western coast of Asia Minor. On Rhodes he painted the interior of a house at Lindos, which he later used as a study for his Royal Academy exhibit of 1871, no. 1118, Cleobolus instructing his daughter Cleoboline (sold at Vost's, Newmarket, Suffolk, 14 April 1997). Cleobolos was a philosopher, and a friend of Plato, who lived at Lindos. His maxims, such as 'Be superior to pleasure' and 'Moderation is the best thing' were recorded by Diogenes Laertius.
