Lot Essay

A melancholy figure gazes into a stream which flows below her, successfully conveying Leighton's intention to paint 'the silent mystery of it all.' (L. Ormond and R. Ormond, Lord Leighton, Yale University Press, 1975, p. 125). The original painting is in Maryhill Museum of Art, Goldendale, Washington.
