Lot Essay

Frederic Leighton's painting depicts Hero anxiously waiting for her lover, Leander, to swim across the Hellespont to join her. Hero's tormented psychological state is reflected in the drapery which binds her and the adjacent marble columns. The original painting is in Manchester City Art Gallery.
