Lot Essay

It has been suggested that the present design is inspired by the Baths of Titus, Rome as the illustrations of these interiors had been published by Monsieur Ponce in 1786. However another possibility is that the illustration relates to the Precinct wall of the Temple of Isis in Pompeii, published in Sir William Hamilton's paper in Archaeologia also in 1786.
