Lot Essay

The Appleby Fair is perhaps the largest and and most well known of the horse fairs in Europe. Held in Appleby-in-Westmorland, Cumbria, it has been in existence since 1685 under protection of a charter granted by King James II and still takes place today.

Atkinson was a painter of animals, specialising in the depiction of horse fairs in and around his native Newcastle. His work, which he exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Scottish Academy, bears great similarity to the early works of Sir Alfred James Munnings (1878-1959).
