Lot Essay

Helen Allingham made numerous watercolour studies of wild garden flowers during her sketching trips in the countryside. Her sketch-books served as an aide-memoire that she used to help carry out fully worked up watercolours at a later date. The demand for Mrs Allingham's work was such that even her sketches were exhibited and bought by her admirers.
