Fremiet began his career as a lithographer and painter, but is best remembered for his sculpture both on a monumental and also smaller scale. His subjects were often animals or historical personages. He was made an honorary member of the Royal Academy in 1904.

The Latin title Credo was the battle cry of the Crusaders and translates as 'I believe'.
