The original, signed, on panel, 29.5 x 36.8 cm, is in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Kassel. It was acquired by Landgraf Wilhelm VIII of Hessen by 1749, as it was recorded in his inventory of that year under number 18. Between 1806 and 1815 the picture was taken to Paris (see C. Hofstede de Groot, A catalogue raisonné etc., 1908, II, p. 366, no. 399 and E. Herzog, die Gemäldegalerie der Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Kassel, 1969, p. 90, no. 64, with ill.).

The donkey which appears to the right of the group of peasants on the original has been omitted in the present lot
