Burne-Jones's subject originates in Thomas Percy's Reliques of Ancient English Poetry of 1765 which was used by Tennyson for his poem, Beggar Maid, in 1842. Burne-Jones's representation emphasises the King's humanity. He has removed his crown and sits on the lowest ledge, intoxicated by the maid's beauty. The original painting is in Tate Britain, London.
