The original is in the Cassa di Risparmio, Pesaro, Italy (see G. Sestieri, Repertorio della pittura romana della fine del Seicento e del Settecento, 1994, I, p. 103 and III, fig. 591)

The subject is taken from the poem Gerusalemme Liberata by the Italian poet Tasso (1544-1595). The story of Armida and the Christian prince Rinaldo was especially populair with French and Italian artists in the 17th and 18th century (see J. Hall, Dictionary of Subjects and Symbols in Art, 1974, pp. 263/64)
