Lot Essay

A partial copy after the painting in the Rijksmuseum, known as the 'parental admonition'. The original, on canvas, 71 x 73 cm, executed circa 1654, was acquired with the Cabinet of van Heteren Gevers, The Hague/Rotterdam, in 1809 (see S.J. Gudlaugsson, Gerard Ter Borch, 1960, I, pp. 116/17 and II, fig. 110).

Albert Pinot was born in Brussels but spent his adult life in Paris, where he was active as a painter of portraits, interiors and landscapes (see P. and V. Berko, Dictionary of Belgian Painters born between 1750 & 1875, 1981, p. 522, with ill.)
