Lot Essay

The original, signed, on panel, 60.5 x 48.5 cm, is in the Koninklijk Kabinet voor Schilderijen het Mauritshuis, The Hague. It passed through several Dutch 18th century collections before being acquired by T.P.C. Haag at the sale of the collection of W. Lormier on 4 July 1763 on behalf of Prince Willem V.

The painting visible in the background depicts the abduction of Hippodamia. The dogs visible on the stairs in the upper right in the original have been omitted in the present lot
