The original, on canvas, 97 x 84.5 cm, has been in the Louvre since 1783, when it was acquired from the collection of Louis XVI
F.W. Robinson dates the original towards 1661/62 and considers it as one of the artist's largest and most ambitious works from his middle period. It can be considered as a compilation of subjects which previously had formed seperate paintings on their own (see F.W. Robinson, Gabriel Metsu (1629-1667), 1974, pp. 44/45, fig. 94).
In comparison with the original the artist of the present copy has omitted the top part of the sky and reduced the painting into a horizontal format. The gables of the houses in the right background have also been slightly altered
