Harry Waugh entered the wine trade in 1934, working with Block, Grey & Block until the outbreak of war. After serving with the Welsh Guards, he joined Harvey's of Bristol, where he elevated their fine wine business into the first rank. He was the most generous and likeable of men, and a brilliant natural taster. He didn't try to describe a wine effusively. It was something that just happened: a kind of instinctive recognition. His judgement was impeccable. I edited three or four of his diaries, and in my own time too - it wrecked my weekends. He dictated the notes into a machine and Prue, his wife, typed them up. When I read them through, I remember at first being horrified. Everyone he met was 'charming', 'delightful', the places 'beautiful', the wines 'gorgeous'. I said: 'Harry, I can't publish all of this! Nobody will believe you, it's too good to be true!' But I now think of it as a sort of 'Queen Mum' syndrome. Harry radiated warmth and generosity and everyone responded in equal measure. The following lots 550 to 749 consist of wines chosen entirely by Harry Waugh's longstanding partner for his personal drinking. All of Harry's personal favourites are represented including fabulous wines from one of his favourite Burgundy vintages 1999. They have all been stored since original purchase in professional storage - please fill your boots. M.B.
