A Japanese wood netsuke of a toad, Signed by Masanao (of Yamada), 19th Century
the delicately carved animal seated on the reverse of a large ruined straw sandal, the rough skin of the back contrasting with the polished face and chest, inlaid horn eyes, incised signature to base in polished rectangular reserve - 2in. (5cm.) wide.
