A RUTILATED QUARTZ, SILVER AND GOLD SET, BY MARILYN COOPERMAN
The strong designs of the following two jewels, combining bold forms with interesting colours and textures, were created by Marilyn F. Cooperman. Her career began at the age of twenty as the first fashion and beauty columnist for the New Zealand Herald, and by the 1960s, Cooperman had opened her own studio as a fashion designer in New York. In 1987, Fred Leighton invited Marilyn Cooperman to become part of his prestigious Madison Avenue jewellery store, where she expertly began redesigning old and creating new pieces. Following her success as a jewellery designer, she launched her own company, Marilyn F. Cooperman, in 1994. Her inspiration comes from interesting gemstones, whether the range of colours seen in the citrines used in the 'Persian' brooch, or the unusual internal characteristics of rutilated quartz combined with a textured and studded metal background. In her own words, 'coloured stones are my obsession'. Equally, the bold structures of her designs, such as the bombé Paisley form harking back to an ancient Kashmiri motif, or the strong quasi-architectural shapes reminiscent of the jewellery designers of the 1940s, highlight the jewels of Marilyn F. Cooperman as collectors' pieces in their own right.
