Carl Andre (b. 1935)
The following three works come from the estate of Hollis Frampton, the noted filmmaker and photographer, who was a good friend of some of the most important artists of the 1960's, including Frank Stella and Carl Andre. Throughout the 1960's, Frampton photographed Andre's work extensively, maintaining a photographic archive, and a voluminous correspondence. Over the course of their long and rich friendship, Frampton acquired the vintage works offered in this sale. The present lots include a classic text piece from the early 1960's, as well as two fascinating examples of the Carl Andre's early collages. The collages were cut up from found scraps of paper or boards and it is interesting to note the gridded composition's relationship to his seminal floor pieces for which Andre is best known.
