CARTER, Susannah. The Frugal Housewife, or Complete Woman Cook. Wherein the Art of Dressing all sorts of Viands ... is Explained ... and Making of English Wines. London: for E. Newbery, 1795. 8°. 2 engraved plates and 12 full-page woodcut arrangements of banquets. Original wrappers, unopened.

Probably the fifth edition of Carter's popular little cookery book with a long section on country wines, cowslip, gooseberry, elder, orange, plum, etc. This work became, for a time, the most early 19th-century American cookery book owing to the appendix added to the 1803 edition, 'An appendix containing several new receipts adapted to the American mode of cooking'. Oxford p.122-123; Bitting pp.78-79 (describing the 1796 edition and listing later ones).
