Although originally destined for a military career, a poor constitution together with a remarkable artistic ability led Verschuring to switch careers and become apprenticed to the portrait painter Derick Govertsz., before going to Utrecht to work with Jan Both for six years. He travelled with his master to Italy to complete his studies, returning to Holland in 1662 where he became a very successful painter of military scenes, sporting and classical landscape subjects. Verschuring ended his career as a painter by becoming burgomaster of Gorkum.
