Lot Essay

At left is the well-known scene from "New Herbs: Part One" (Chapter 34): Kashiwagi and his three younger brothers are playing football (kemari). When a small cat comes running out from behind the blinds of the women's quarters, a curtain is pulled back to reveal the Third Princess behind it and Kashiwagi is smitten with love for her.
