For the second, born the third son of Kato Kobei of Seto, Kanzan, or Shountei, moved to Kyoto and set up a kiln in Higashiyama in 1862. In 1870 he studied under Gottfreid Wagner, and became proficient in the sue of Western pigments. In 1871 he was commissioned by the Imperial Household, and in 1872 the Emperor Meiji bought one of his pieces at the Kyoto Fair. From this year he used the name Kanzan Denshichi, signed Dai Nippon on his export work. He was awarded a silver prize at Vienna in 1873, and became famous throughout Japan during the 1870s and 80s.
