Lot Essay

Trained as a stone-mason, William Widgery was an self-taught landscape and animal painter from Exeter. After making a substantial amount of money producing imitations of Landseers The monarch of the Glen, he took up art as a profession, painting around Devon and Cornwall, and developing a reputation 'of great local repute'.
