Lot Essay

Joseph Chinard (1755-1813) was born in Lyon, the son of a silk-merchant. He executed his bust of Juliette Recamier, one of the most fashionable and beautiful women in Napoleonic France, between 1802-05. Chinard's original terracotta bust is in the Getty Museum, Los Angeles. It was produced in several different versions in both clay and marble.
