Armand Bouten was born in Venlo, The Netherlands, in 1893. He attended the 'Rijksnormaalschool Voor Tekenonderwijzers' in Amsterdam. Bouten was married to Hanny Korevaar, with whom he travelled extensively across Europe. Attracted by the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the major European cities, he spent periods in Budapest, Berlin, Marseille and Paris between 1920 and 1935. Inspired by the vivid life of local people, his art took on a more expressionist vibrancy of palette, that can be associated with the work of Marc Chagall. 'Birth' is one of Bouten's major themes. In 1935 he finally settled in Brussels where he would live until his return to Amsterdam in 1957.
