Lot Essay

It is very unusual for a 17th century English table to be constructed from such exotic timbers. Although the legs are probably rosewood, there is a possibility that they may be Bullitwood, a smooth dense exotic timber described by Nicholas Roope, a merchant, in 1617 as 'red and peckled timber'. (see an article by Victor Chinnery in Antique Collecting 1982, vol 17, No.6)
