The immediacy and vibrancy of this sketch reveals Brough's debt to his friend John Singer Sargent (1856-1925). After the artist's death at the tragically early age of 33, Sargent is alleged to have completed some of Brough's unfinished canvases upon the request of his widow. The present study, however, appears to be entirely by Brough's hand.
