Lot Essay

Sarah Louisa Kilpack was born in Covent Garden in London, but at the age of 24, following a series of family bereavements, she moved to Jersey where she developed her skills as a painter. She is particularly noted for her stormy and evocative seascapes and coastal scenes of the Channel Islands. Two of her paintings of Guernsey were exhibited at the eleventh Annual Exhibition of the Society of Female Artists in 1867 and a further two were selected for exhibition at the British Institute.
