Lot Essay
The Porto Franco was one of Cooke's favourite subjects, and the present view compares to 'Porto Franco, Dogana & Campanile' (1864; see J. Munday, E. W. Cooke, A Man of his Time, 1996, Woodbridge, p. 189, pl. 142). The Scuola della Salute can be glimpsed behind the trees; and the Dogana di Mare - the Maritime Customs House with its distinctive gold globe - is also visible. Cooke was often to be found in its vicinity, painting on his gondola, taking his subjects from the thriving seatrade which Venice entertained.
John Munday has suggested a possible identification in the unlocated To Palli off Scuola della Salute including Dog. & Duc, no. 77/4 (p. 356) in his book.
We are grateful to John Munday for his help in the preparation of this catalogue entry.
