Lot Essay

Frederick Vigers was a painter of landscape and literary subjects who exhibited both in London and the provinces. He was also involved in the Arts and Crafts movement, and produced a range of designs for furniture, textiles and wall paper. His work was frequently on show at the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society, including an 'Apollo & Daphne' tapestry in 1910.

The present portrait is a testament to Vigers' sense of design. The austere elegance of the composition is offset by the studied details, such as the bunch of pansies.
