Charles Robert Leslie was a painter of historical and humorous genre, exhibiting at the Royal Academy from 1813-1849. This painting depicts Elizabeth I joined by courtiers and subjects celebrating May Day. The Queen, who is situated on the far right, watches the frivolities whilst the foreground is dominated by a courting couple. In the background the celebrations are in full swing with people dancing around the maypole and characters dressed as Robin Hood, Maid Marian, Friar Tuck, a hobby horse, a fool and a dragon.
