FLOREZ ESTRADA, Alvaro (1765-1854). Curso de economia politica. London: D.M. Calero, 1828. 2 volumes, 8°. Half-titles, errata leaf at end of vol.I, 2 errata leaves at end of vol.II (half-title in vol.I and final errata leaf in vol.II browned, occasional foxing). Contemporary tree sheep, compartments of flat spines ruled in gilt, red lettering pieces (head and foot of spines and corners a little worn). Provenance: Visconde do Torrão (armorial bookplate on verso of half-titles).
SCARCE FIRST EDITION of the first systematic treatise on economics written by a Spaniard. Florez Estrada who had been chief justice of Seville was exiled to England at the restoration of Fernando's absolute rule in 1823. This, his principal work, was 'based principally upon the theories of Adam Smith and the English economists contemporary with Flórez Estrada ... He supported Malthus' theory of population and Ricardo's theory of rent. His most original doctrine was that private ownership of land was an unjust privilege to which should be ascribed "the labourer's failure to obtain the entire fruit of his labor" ... Flórez Estrada had considerable influence upon the development of the science of economics in Spain.
