Original brick-red cloth, uncut (corners and sides a little marked, inner hinges beginning to crack). Provenance: Philip, Son & Nephew (contemporary bookseller's ticket) -- Petrus Johannes Verdoorn (1911-1982), Dutch economist and promulgator of Verdoorn's law (signature, dated August 1947, on half-title).
FIRST EDITION of Jevons' outstanding work, his reputation already having been made by A Serious Fall in the Value of Gold (1863) and The Coal Question (1865). 'As regards the discovery of the connexion between value in exchange and final (or marginal) utility [the central theme to The Theory] the priority belongs to Gossen, but this in no way detracts from the great importance of the service which Jevons rendered to English economics by his fresh discovery of the principle, and by the way in which he ultimately forced it into notice', Encyclopaedia Britannica. Marshall said of his work in economics that it 'will probably be found to have more constructive force than any, save that of Ricardo, that has been done for the last hundred years' and Schumpeter (p.826) described the author as 'one of the most genuinely original economists who ever lived'.
