FIRST EDITION, SCARCE. Schumpeter describes Marshall's work as 'the classical achievement of the period, that is, the work that embodies more perfectly than any other, the classical situation that emerged around 1900. I believe that Lord Keynes meant to express a similar evaluation when he listed the publication of the Principles as the first of three events in 1890 from which the "modern age of British economists" is to be dated', Schumpeter, p.834. Einaudi 3736.
