MARX, Karl (1818-83). Capital: A Critical Analysis of Capitalist Production. London: Swan Sonnenschein, Lowrey, & Co., 1887. 2 volumes, 8°. Half-titles (clean tear in Y1 in vol. I affecting 4 lines of text, G7 in vol. I roughly opened, one or two margins very lightly thumb-soiled, very light marginal browning as usual). Original cloth (recased with head and tail of spines skilfully restored, a few light marks on upper cover of vol.II). Provenance: Manchester Reform Club (bookplates on pastedowns with pencilled shelf marks).
FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH of Marx's Das Kapital. Translated from the third German edition by Samuel Moore and Edward Aveling, the work was edited by Friedrich Engels. This edition only contains book I. Although Engels had already published the German edition of Volume II in 1885, he states in the preface, that a translation of it without volume III would be incomplete. The German edition of volume III did not appear until 1894. Although based on the German edition, this translation also takes account of substantial changes Marx made for the French translation of 1872-5. Draper II, M129; Rubel 633; Stammhammer I, p.145. (2)
