SMITH, Adam (1723-1790). Investigacion de la naturaleza y causas de la riqueza de las naciones, translated by Josef Alonso Ortiz. Valladolid: viuda e hijos de Santander, 1794. 4 volumes, 4° (206 x 136mm). Half-title in vol.I (marginal worming at beginning and end of all vol., worst at end of vol.I & III and at the beginning of vol.II, browning in vol.I and IV, a few marks in ink in the margins of vol.II). Contemporary Spanish half calf, flat spines gilt with contrasting red and green lettering and numbering pieces, red edges (extremities rubbed). Provenance: a few near-contemporary marginalia in vol.IV.
FIRST EDITION IN SPANISH OF THE WEALTH OF NATIONS, translated by Josef Alonso Ortiz who has added a 41pp. appendix at the end of volume II on the Banco Nacional Español de San Carlos, established at Madrid in 1783. A second edition appeared, also at Valladolid, in 1805-06. The first appearance of Smith in Spanish had occurred two years earlier with the publication of a translation of Condorcet's summary of the Wealth of Nations.
