Early 20th-century polished calf gilt, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges (extremities a little rubbed). Provenance: Henry E. Butler (leaving present from Eton, dated 1900, in contrast to a note by M.R. James, then provost of Eton, explaining that this was one of a number of leaving presents accidentally retained by the then headmaster, Dr Balston, and not finally relinquished until 1919: with also a TLs, 23 July 1920, from the School Clerk informing Viscountess Mountgarret that the 'leaving book is being sent to you today').
