COGAN, Thomas (c. 1545-1607). The Haven of Health. Chiefly gathered for the Comfort of Students. London: Anne Griffin for Roger Ball, 1636. 4° (186 x 131mm). (Title slightly soiled, occasional marginal soiling, C2 with paper faults.) Contemporary calf (rebacked, endpapers renewed, corners bumped, cut marks and chips on covers). Provenance: Thomas Sutton (inscription on title, dated 1628, with purchase price of 2/-) -- William Butter (1752 inscription on final verso, with further note "Given to Wm. Ledward) -- John Jackson of Warrington (?his pencil note on front blank and title).
Sixth edition, though described as 'fourth' on the title, second issue with cancel title-page. A fascinating list of 28 'Rules for Health' in an early 17-century hand is bound in on two blanks at the front of this copy. After resigning his fellowship of Oriel College in 1575, Cogan became chief master of Manchester grammar school while also practising as a physician. At his death he gave 4d to each boy in the school, and his book of dietary precepts, first published in 1584, reflects his care for 'the comfort of students'. STC 5484.
