MILTON -- PALMER, Thomas (calligrapher), and Rd. CARPENTER (engraver). An engraved writing sheet, headed Milton's Paradise Lost. London: published by Rd. Carpenter, engraver & printer, and Champante & Whitrow, 1 October 1791.
Heading incorporating landscape oval illustration of Adam and Eve 'These Leaves they gather'd...', the central area flanked by three portrait oval illustrations on either side, each illustrating a scene from 'Paradise Lost' with appropriate text beneath. The central area with 11 lines of calligraphic manuscript text in dark brown ink, with decorative penwork and three line 'imprint' beneath the text: 'Thomas Palmer Scripsit Decr. 23. 1791', four horizontal dividing lines in red. Sheet size: 475 x 388mm. (Numerous small neatly repaired tears, some light marginal soiling).

A FINE EXAMPLE OF A HIGHLY EPHEMERAL TYPE OF PUBLICATION. Where schoolgirls would produce sewing samplers on canvas or linen, schoolboys produced writing sheets. The samplers were generally much more durable, and writing sheets, such as the present example, are consequently much rarer.
