Satish Gujral, is both a renowned sculptor and architect, as well as one of India's most well-known painters. Born in Jhelum, Gujral's childhood was altered when a debilitating illness took away his hearing. The tragedy inspired him to turn to literature and art as a means of expression and communication. In 1939, he enrolled in the Mayo School of Art in Lahore to pursue painting and sculpture, mastering a plethora of mediums and techniques. He was winner of India's National Award for painting twice and their National Award for sculpture once, Gujral has also received considerable recognition outside his native country and was awarded Mexico's "Lifetime Achievement Award" for his work.
