Lot Essay

This particular painting from 1982 concisely demonstrates the transition between Raza's 70s and 80s style and one of his earlier forays into the depiction of the bindu. The background still retains some of the loosened composition of his earlier paintings but clearly has a more structured geometry. According to G. Sen, "The change in Raza's creative philosophy has manifested itself in very specific ways on his canvas. The strong element of spontaneity seen in the earlier works is now replaced with a carefully conceived image, where "thinking precedes the act of painting." (G. Sen, Bindu: Space and Time in Raza's Vision, New Delhi, 1997, p. 11.)
