The sides finely carved with an extensive river landscape, on one side figures are shown steering a sampan through wind-tossed waves while a scholar is seen walking across a bridge at the base, on the reverse another scholar is shown standing outside a walled compound, all surrounded by rock formations and trees and with three different trees, including a pine, forming the handle at one end, the boughs of the pine tree continuing over the rim, of deep honey color

Lot Essay

The scene depicted on the present cup is inspired by the 17th Century artist Wang Shiyi's landscape painting, Yueyang Daguantu, (Scene of Yueyang Pavilion).
