Lot Essay

A similar wood figure of a bodhisattva of this size shown standing atop a similar base, but with hands clasped before the chest, and also dated to the Yuan dynasty, was sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 10 June 1991, lot 536. On both figures the skirt tapers towards the feet, as it does on a slightly smaller related wood figure of a bodhisattva standing on a very similar base illustrated in the catalogue of the Exhibition of Chinese Arts, C. T. Loo & Co., New York, 1 November 1941 - 30 April 1942, no. 960.
