The tapering handle finely engraved on top with foliate meander reserved on a fine ring-punched ground rising from a flower motif and continuing to a small duck's head terminal at the other end, the deep scalloped bowl chased on the exterior with a foliate spray reserved on a ring-punched ground on each of the eight lobes below a plain border

Lot Essay

A silver ladle of this type and date, with curved handle that also terminates in a bird's head and has a similarly scalloped bowl, in the collection of the Seattle Art Museum, was included in the exhibition, The Arts of the T'ang Dynasty, Los Angeles County Museum, 8 January - 17 February 1957, pp. 122-3, no. 348. A very similar ladle from the collection of The Hon. Hugh Scott, illustrated in his book, The Golden Age of Chinese Art, Rutland, Vermont, 1967, pl. 13, was later sold in these rooms, 2 December 1982, lot 399.
