A very similar bowl is illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum - 35 - Blue and White Porcelain with Underglaze Red (II), Hong Kong, 2000, p. 82, no. 76, where it is noted that the wan character is srivatsa in sanskrit, which means the 'gathering place for all things auspicious'. The entry goes on to mention that this symbol appeared on the Buddha's chest, and that during the Tang dynasty the symbol became known as wan.
