AN UNUSUAL CARVED BURLWOOD BRUSHPOT, BITONG
LATE 18TH/19TH CENTURY
Of irregular outline, one side deeply carved with a scene of scholars in a mountainous retreat, with several figures in a boat in a river in the foreground below a scholar seated in a pavilion raised on pilings above the water, with two other scholars ascending steep stairs that rise through towering pine trees, where a stone wall is visible behind their trunks and a pavilion and another scholar on a terrace are visible above the upper boughs, yet one more scholar can be seen carrying a basket in a narrow, deep recess in the mountainside, the reverse retaining the natural grain, whorls and knots in the wood
12 in. (30.5 cm.) high, 15 in. (38.1 cm.) across
