Finely woven with a scene of Xiwangmu seated on a phoenix descending from the sky to greet the Eight Daoist Immortals and Shoulao, with Li Tieguai seated on a large bamboo gourd in the foreground, the entourage assembled on a ground of waves below cloud-enveloped mountains, the facial features finely painted, all in muted tones of beige, brown, blue and taupe with some highlights in gilt

Lot Essay

This hanging depicts Yaochi, or the Turquoise Pond in the Daoist paradise on Mount Kunlun. At the top, Xiwangmu, the Queen Mother of the West, rides a phoenix and is accompanied by her Jade Maidens to greet the Three Stars Gods - the Gods of Longevity, Emolument and Good Fortune. Below are various deities and their attendants, including the famed Baxian or Eight Immortals.
