Château Lynch-Bages--Vintage 1961
Pauillac, 5me cru classé
In original wooden cases
Lot 246 good appearance. Levels: five mid, two mid/low, one low and one below low-shoulder. Lot 247 good appearance. Levels: three top, six upper and three mid-shoulder
Tasting Note: Over 30 notes starting with two good Lupton's bottlings in 1967. Seven notes since 1990, all but one good - a delicious but fagged out bottle at the La Réserve tasting (1999). Lastly - a great surprise - a magnum bottled by Findlater Mackie, bought in the early 1960s and well cellared since: richly coloured, still impressively deep, beautiful nose with a characteristic though toned down Lynch-Bages 'cassis', a touch of sweetness, nice weight, soft, rounded, harmonious, with well assimilated tannins. A perfect drink. Last noted at a Sunday lunch in Gloucestershire at Clare and David Carter's, May 2001 ***** M.B.
